چکیده
Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) including the hookworms Necator americanus and Ancylostoma spp., Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura affect over 1.5 billion people worldwide are estimated to have caused 1.9 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). With concerted effort in expanding improving targeted mass drug administration (MDA) programs past decade, along with decreasing prevalence, infections several endemic areas tend be of low intensity. Conventional microscopy-based methods recommended for detection STH parasitological surveys been shown less sensitive these low-intensity settings. As communities progress towards elimination through MDA improved sanitation, there is a pressing need highly techniques that detect true prevalence evaluate effectiveness ongoing interventions. Molecular involve analysis DNA rather than morphology organism specific, allowing both quantitation species discrimination. The following review discusses different sample collection strategies, pre-processing steps, extraction platforms, nucleic acid available diagnosis surveillance STH. We contrasted utility molecular tools against conventional currently used most While primarily qPCR based, newer technologies also become automation increased throughput, making increasingly cost-effective potentially amenable use low-resource

Molecular Diagnostics for Soil-Transmitted Helminths
Historically, the diagnosis of soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) (e.g., Strongyloides stercoralis, Trichuris trichiura, Ancylostoma duodenale, Necator americanus, and Ascaris lumbricoides) has relied on often-insensitive microscopy techniques. Over the past several years, there has been an effort to use molecular diagnostics, particularly quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), to detect...
متن کاملThe Right Tool for the Job: Detection of Soil-Transmitted Helminths in Areas Co-endemic for Other Helminths
BACKGROUND Due to the recent increased use of the McMaster (MM) fecal egg counting method for assessing benzimidazole drug efficacy for treating soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections, the aim of the current study was to determine the operational value of including the MM method alongside the Kato-Katz (KK) fecal thick smear to increase the diagnostic sensitivity when STHs are co-endemic wi...

Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) collectively infect one fourth of all human beings, and the majority of livestock in the developing world. These gastrointestinal nematodes are the most important parasites on earth with regard to their prevalence in humans and livestock. Current anthelmintic drugs are losing their efficacies due to increasing drug resistance, particularly in STHs of livestock ...

Sentinel surveillance of lymphatic filariasis, schistosomiasis soil transmitted helminths and malaria in rural southern Malawi.
BACKGROUND Baseline prevalence and knowledge, attitude and perception (KAP) survey is a prerequisite for mass drug administration for the control of Lymphatic filariasis (LF) and other neglected tropical diseases. METHODS In preparation for the first mass drug administration for LF elimination, a baseline survey was conducted in six sentinel sites in the southern Malawi, amongst participants ...
